MS closes more Critical Virus loopholes (update your system now!)

Greetings from The VACM Team,

In This Issue:
----------------------
- MS closes more Critical Virus loopholes (update your system now!)

***************************************************
* The Bottom Line...
***************************************************
Microsoft has released another cumulative set of updates which
closes the door on malware emails' and web pages' ability to steal
data from your system, run virus code on your system, bypass the
"Restricted Zone" safeties and more.

***************************************************
* What You Should Do...
***************************************************
1. Update your system.  Even if you do not use Internet Explorer to
surf the web, many other parts of Windows use IE internally, which
makes your system vulnerable.  Without this patch, your email
can infect your system WITHOUT you opening any file
attachment and, in some cases, without even opening the email !!

First, determine what version of IE is on your system by starting
IE, then click on "HELP", then "ABOUT INTERNET EXPLORER".  Make a
note of BOTH the "Version" AND the "Update Versions" numbers so
that you will know what "SP" level (Service Pack) of IE you have.
For example, in the HELP | ABOUT screen, you will see the version
AND service pack (SP) level that are installed on your system.
Samples of version you might see include:

     5.5 SP1
     5.5 SP2
5.00.3315.1000 SP2 (this one is actually v5.01 SP2. For some
strange reason that escapes everyone's logic, Microsoft
broke the version naming rules on this one)

Beware the version number that begins with "5.00.31...." because
it is really referred to as version 5.01.

Once you know what version of IE is on your system, you can
apply the correct patch for your version of IE.  Get the MS
  update at:

MS IE Patch, May 15, 2002

Follow the instructions on the Microsoft web pages for doing the
installation of this latest set of updates.

You need this update if you have any of the following
  version of IE:

     - Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01
     - Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5
     - Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0

******** APPENDIX - Handy How-To Tips **********

  * How To Boot into Safe Mode

Shut the computer down so that the power is off.

Turn the computer on, wait 1 second and begin pressing the F8 key
on the keyboard, once every second repeatedly. Do this until
the Windows Startup Menu appears. If you get a keyboard
error, press F1 to resume and then continue pressing the
F8 key once every second, or your PC may tell you to press another key for BIOS setup.

Select Safe Mode from the Windows Startup Menu, then press
the Enter key on the keyboard.

Windows will then boot into Safe Mode.
NOTE: This may take longer than a normal boot.

At the end of the boot process a dialog box will appear
informing you that Windows is in Safe Mode. Click OK on this dialog box.

Windows is now in Safe Mode.

If you miss hitting the F8 at the right time, Windows will boot
normally and you will not see the "Safe Mode" message.  In this
case, start from the top of these instructions until you get the
boot menu screen where you can choose "Safe Mode".  This can be
a little tricky the first time you do it.
