***************************************************
* The Bottom Line...
***************************************************

Beagle.J is a mass-mailing worm.  It installs a back door on your
computer that allows bad hacker(s) to gain complete control of your
system via the internet.  The back door opens on TCP port 2745.

Beagle.J also has its own built in mass mailer to send itself to
everyone you know (your address book and other sources on your PC).
Beagle.J contacts the hacker(s) when it becomes active to tell
them your IP address and its listening port.

Beagle.J spreads through file-sharing networks (Kazaa, iMesh, etc.,
by dropping itself into the folders that contain "shar" in their
names.

Beagle.J does not come from who it says.  It comes from someone
you know most likely.  Or someone who at least has you in their
PC's address book.

The email has the following characteristics:

From: this is spoofed to look as though it is coming from the one of the
     following addresses:

     management
     support
     administration
     staff
     noreply

Attachment: A password-protected zip file, containing a randomly
named .exe or .pif file (executable) inside.  DO NOT double-click it!

***************************************************
* What You Should Do
***************************************************

If you have ZoneAlarm Pro or another firewall that allows you to block
outgoing traffic on port 2745, make those settings ASAP.

Immediately update your antivirus software (manually... don't wait for
an automatic or scheduled update to arrive).

* If you use a version of Norton Antivirus...

If you are a Symantec corporate subscriber and need the
Norton Antivirus defs for Beagle.J, go here:

Also, if you have Norton Antivirus and need more info on how to run
LiveUpdate, please go here:

If you have problems with your Antivirus software, you can always

******** APPENDIX - Handy How-To Tips **********

  * How To Boot into Safe Mode

Shut the computer down so that the power is off.

Turn the computer on, wait 1 second and begin pressing the F8 key
on the keyboard, once every second repeatedly. Do this until
the Windows Startup Menu appears. If you get a keyboard
error, press F1 to resume and then continue pressing the
F8 key once every second, or your PC may tell you to press another key for BIOS setup.

Select Safe Mode from the Windows Startup Menu, then press
the Enter key on the keyboard.

Windows will then boot into Safe Mode.
NOTE: This may take longer than a normal boot.

At the end of the boot process a dialog box will appear
informing you that Windows is in Safe Mode. Click OK on this dialog box.

Windows is now in Safe Mode.

If you miss hitting the F8 at the right time, Windows will boot
normally and you will not see the "Safe Mode" message.  In this
case, start from the top of these instructions until you get the
boot menu screen where you can choose "Safe Mode".  This can be
a little tricky the first time you do it.
