What we know about low cost lighting-   In the first few years that we lived in an area with frequent power outages during the winter, we purchased a portable emergency generator, followed by a larger generator the year later and, as finances permitted, we finally installed photovoltaic solar panels and battery storage.  The main thing that we learned during these exercises was that it really becomes important to conserve electricity because the less power you need, the easier (and cheaper) it is to implement solar power, wind power, backup generators and so forth.
With conservation and efficiency in mind, we began to invest in lighting that runs on less electricity to minimize our daily power requirements.  While CF (compact florescent) bulbs are a huge step in the right direction, LED bulbs are a QUANTUM leap in energy efficiency AND they last a lifetime.
hint:  a good rule of thumb to remember is that florescent lights are twice as efficient as incandescent lights and LED lights are 4 times more efficient than florescent lights.  So, when you see a LED light rated for 10 watts, just multiply by 8 to get the equivalent incandescent rating.  For example, a 10 watt LED light will provide the same amount of light as an 80 watt incandescent bulb.
Give the gift of light- One of our most favorably received Christmas gifts of all time is LED night lights.   People we gave these to loved them so much that they still thank us a year or more later.  LED night lights provide nice, bright, white light and they consume less than 1 watt of electricity.  Everyone simply LOVES them because they work, they are cheap to run, and they last a lifetime.  We put one in every room and hallway and we never noticed any change in our electric bills.
LED lighting is so much better than anything else on the market right now that we predict they will eventually be the norm in years to come.  There already are LED lights that can screw into a light socket but they are not inexpensive to buy.  They do pay for themselves over time, however.  And, as LED lights become cheaper, we will probably see fewer and fewer incandescent and florescent lights being used.  Think about it - the incandescent light is very old technology - over 100 years old, in fact.  Incandescent bulbs have changed very little since Thomas Edison invented them in 1879.  To this day, they are inherently wasteful devices, turning most of your electricity into heat instead of light.
